The Challenge

Securing an Open-World MMORPG Built on Unreal Engine 4

Frozen Flame is an open-world fantasy MMORPG developed using Unreal Engine 4 networking. With deep progression systems, crafting mechanics, and multiplayer faction play, the title relies on robust server-side validation and secure live services.

For Dreamside Interactive, the objective was to validate the game’s resilience against real-world attack scenarios before malicious actors could exploit gameplay systems.

The scope included:

  • Resource gathering systems
  • Crafting mechanics (weapons, armor, housing)
  • Leveling and trait progression
  • Combat abilities and skill trees
  • Physics systems (movement, gliding, flying, combat)
  • Friend, party, and guild functionality
  • Faction systems

In MMORPG environments, vulnerabilities in progression, combat, or social systems can impact both economy balance and player trust.

The Cyrex Solution

Black Box Penetration Testing of Gameplay & Multiplayer Systems

Cyrex conducted comprehensive black box penetration testing, simulating real-world attacker conditions without internal source code access.

This methodology evaluates exposed services and gameplay flows from the perspective of an external malicious actor.

Unreal Engine Networking Assessment

Leveraging our familiarity with Unreal Engine networking protocols, Cyrex quickly mapped gameplay flows and identified critical interaction points.

We tested:

  • Server-side validation of player movement and combat actions
  • Crafting and item creation logic
  • Progression and trait enforcement mechanisms
  • Social system interactions (guilds, parties, factions)

The objective was to determine whether gameplay actions could be manipulated or improperly authorized.

Vulnerability Identification & Reporting

During testing, Cyrex identified several unique vulnerabilities, some deemed critical by the client’s technical team.
